Guinness World Record in sight…

It wasn’t the mass roar of a packed stadium, perhaps, but the dozen or so hardy souls who’d seen out the night managed a collective cheer as the official timing clock reached the 21 hour mark, and as the first glimmer of dawn appeared over Table Mountain, Jan Braai’s assault on the Guinness World Record for Longest Braai looked well within reach. Seven and a half hours to go…

…and 21 very demanding hours gone, with the small hours of a bitter Cape Town morning the toughest to negotiate. As the wind got up and smoke played havoc with Jan, and fatigue kicked in, the true extent of the challenge became apparent. But regular doses of meat from a consistent fire (manned by Jan’s silent assistant, nicknamed ‘The Brig’ in tribute to Top Gear’s ‘The Stig’) kept Jan going through a tough few hours.

And then there was an added celebrity bonus: just after 11pm, 5FM starlet Kim Schulze, Sasha Martinengo’s sharp-tongued sidekick, flew in from Johannesburg to see out the rest of the record attempt, and add some life to Jan and his team. With Braai Day Ambassador Dan Nicholl hosting the event, and a steady stream of Thursday revellers dropping in for sustenance on the way home, spirits held together, and by sunrise the collective energy was back, and the record was well in sight. 14:00 South African time is the targeted finish, but 13:27 will see a new record set – and the accompanying cheer will be far louder when the mark is finally reached.
