National Heritage Day is the public holiday that falls on 24 September every year where all South Africans are encouraged to gather around fires and actively celebrate their heritage by: dressing in traditional attire; preparing traditional food; be entertained by traditional music; and exchange cultures and stories. This year, we are inviting members of the public to apply for entries to join us on a tour through South Africa in the build-up to that big day. This is a social rally and tour to premier destinations traversing South Africa; gearing up for National Braai Day™ on 24 September; visiting heritage sites of significance and natural beauty; braaing a variety of meals. In short, a structured self drive adventure for passionate and patriotic South Africans (and those who wish they were South African).

Quick Facts

  • You will eat steak every day
  • 8 days, 8 locations, 8 braais
  • Saturday 13/9/2014 (Johannesburg) – Saturday 20/9/2014 (Cape Town)
  • approximately 2200km total distance
  • 4 entrants per team, limited number of teams
  • camping accommodation
  • one official braai per day
  • additional casual braai opportunities
  • a ‘normal’ vehicle is sufficient

The Route

Starting in the City of Gold and ending in the Mother City, the National Braai Day Warm Up Tour will take participants through some of the most beautiful parts of natural South African heritage. SANParks, the custodians of Africa’s Premier Wildlife Tourism Destinations is an official supporter of this tour and the route takes us past Golden Gate National Park, Mountain Zebra National Park,  Addo Elephant National Park, Wilderness National Park, Bontebok National Park and Table Mountain National Park. A detailed route map will be made available to all participants at registration.

Some logistics and questions you might have

  • Each team responsible for their own camping equipment. Some pre-specified braai equipment and camp equipement will be distributed to each team at registration in Johannesburg on 13/9/2014.
  • Teams will transport and set up their own camp equipment and tents in pre-assigned areas within the #braaitour village every day.
  • Using the ingredients and recipe provided teams prepare their own fires and teams braai their own food at designated times for the official braai of the day.
  • Teams drive themselves in their own vehicles and at their own risk. The organizers take no responsibility.
  • This is not a race, there will be no incentive whatsoever to arrive at the stopovers first.
  • There will be incentives for visiting and observing all heritage sites of whatever nature on the route and taking part in all activities on the route that will form part of the tour. All of these will be pointed out in the comprehensive briefing document and map you receive at registration.
  • Zero drinking & driving. Specified and spot checks of drivers, positive test will lead to immediate disqualification of team with no refund, no glory and no more #braaitour for you. All participants to sign both an indemnity and a #braaitour code of conduct.
  • Official daily braai at village, no driving after that.
  • Medical and security officer at #braaitour villages.
  • No under 18’s.

What is included?

  • A comprehensive briefing document and route map. Official stickers for your vehicle and flags and other paraphernalia for your campsite.
  • Official t-shirt & cap per entrant. We will probably give you more, watch this space.
  • All braai equipment you need to perform the daily official braai (grid, stand, tongs, etc) which teams get to keep after the tour.
  • All cutlery needed for preparing and enjoying your meals. Chopping boards, chef’s knifes, plates, cups, knives, forks, etc. Teams get to keep this after tour.
  • Campsites and braai areas.
  • Everything you need for the daily official braai: Wood, firelighters, meat, JanBraai™ recipe and all other ingredients and spices for braaing the meat as well as preparation of side dishes.
  • Campfires, music and entertainment (you will be the entertainment).
  • Cash bar with daily specials (your first drink is on us, i.e. included).
  • Facilities to wash your dishes and braai equipment
  • Facilities to wash yourself
  • Morning coffee and basic breakfast. Basic breakfast means something like a boerewors roll.
  • A finisher’s medal (to official finishers). The greatest bragging right that will ever adorn your braai mantelpiece.

What is not included?

Please assume that anything not stated in the previous section is not included but specifically:

  • You need to get yourself to the start in Johannesburg and/or back from the finish in Cape Town. Also get your own travel and medical insurance.
  • You drive in your own vehicle and pay your own fuel, tollgates, etc. Most roads will be tar with a bit of gravel road here and there. A normal car is sufficient. Just arrive in a car big enough to carry your team of four and your camping and braai equipment.
  • You bring your own camping equipment. As a minimum we believe you should bring one 4 person tent and 4 sleeping bags. Whether you bring things like camping mattresses, cushions and blankets for the cold are optional and up to you.
  • All other meals and snacks (apart from the morning coffee, breakfast and official braai per day)
  • Team outfits and uniforms. You are expected to dress up for the occasion.
  • Options: There will not be options as our budget does not allow for it. You will braai and eat lots of red-meat on a daily basis, many times steak. If this idea does not appeal to you, please do not enter.

The cost per team of four is R10,000.

    good day

On the 23 of September will be a day before national braai day and I am planning to do a braai lunch and braai master lunch competition, something fun for our staff, since we don’t have any fun activities we don in the office often.

I will like to request to have you (National braai day) as organisation to help me in running and sponsoring this event and make it fun for our staff. Any additional cost can be covered by us as company.

I hope my request will be taken to consideration and looking forward to getting a feedback.

    Dear Jan

I am wanting to buy a new braai for my husband for his birthday. Can you recommend where and what type of braai I get? Movable, light, practical, easy to clean and use, wood burning (never gas). We live in Cape Town.

    Thank you
